What Is Love?

Love is a wonderful feeling felt in different ways by different people. Whether it is love for family, for friends, for romantic partners, for possessions, for places or even for ideas, we have all loved something. Is there a universal definition for love or is it all relative? What is love? What are the characteristics of love? How can we recognize love when we see it and when we feel it? How do we express love? To whom do we show love?  And what do God and religion tell us about love?

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

“It is true you will not be able to guide every one whom you love; but Allah guides those whom He will. And He knows best those who receive guidance.” Qur’an 28:56

“And among His Signs is that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy between your [hearts]: Verily in that are Signs for those who reflect.” Qur’an 30:21

“Nay. -- Those that keep their plighted faith and act aright, -- verily Allah loves those who act aright.” Qur’an 3:76
