The Sanctity of Human Life

All life is considered sacred by both Christianity and Islam. The importance of human life is well documented in both the Bible and the Qur’an.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations. Jeremiah 1:5
Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image. Genesis 9:6
Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Psalm 127:3
You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. Matthew 5:21-22

“on that account: we ordained for the children of Israel that if anyone slew a person-unless it be in retaliation for murder or for spreading mischief in the land- it would be as if he slew all mankind: and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all humanity” [Qur’an 5:32]

In accordance with the Islamic faith, scholars are of the opinion that the ultimate objectives Islamic law is for mankind to be able to live peacefully in this world, with himself and one another according to al-Quran and al-Sunnah, the objectives include five main areas:
    1. Protection of life, in fact that is purely the reason the law of Qisas is established. (Eye for an eye). With that idea in the mind of people of being killed if one caused the life of another, it’s liable people will be cautious and respect the lives of individuals. for the law is there to serve as a deterrent to murder not actually to kill.
    2. Protection of the religion, which has to do with sweeping away sacrilege and profanity, as believers of all faith, religion is not to be taken for granted or an element of jest by some even if they aren’t subscribed to the religion.
    3. Protection of Progeny or Offspring, can you believe that’s punishment for fornication and adultery is introduced and exercisesd, else, think of how many children will lack the identity of parent (legitimate)or even provided with the fundamental rights of child care.
    4. Protection of Intellect or Faculty of Reason, this is the reason all religions frowns at intoxicants and all harmful drugs, and it really make sense. lastly,
Protection of Material Wealth or Resources, indeed that’s why hands are chopped, the simple wisdom is to ignite the fear in minds not to temper with people’s hard earned wealth and for the hands to be cut is easier than to render a hardworking reward of individuals to just disappear through the simple gesture of an arm or weapon in the hands of a lazy person called the thief or robber.
